Often people with disabilities experience barriers to leisure due to the perspectives of leisure professionals not as a result of their disability.  Negative attitudes are found to be directly associated with negative leisure experiences.  It is important to review and recognize the differences between these leisure experiences.  As a coach or leisure professional it’s a fine balance of knowing when to use reactance; extrinsic motivation (winning a trophy, prizes, food) vs. intrinsic motivation (playing because you love it); mastery orientation (motivated by failing) instead of promoting helplessness orientation (giving up because failed); setting up responsive environments; emphasizing indirect competition vs. direct competition; and how to influence degree interest and challenge for optimum success.
